Open Floor Movement

Conscious dance is the mainstay of my authentic connection to life.  Moving from the inside out, it is easy to make visible what is going on under the surface.  Through movement, my  capacity for experiencing and expressing what’s true is in any given moment is deepened.

I first learned about conscious dance at Omega Institute when I participated in a Gabrielle Roth (creator of 5 Rhythms) workshop in 1999. Since then I have found dance floors wherever I have roamed, studying with as many teachers as I could find along the way.

In 2013, I  began two trainings simultaneously,  Tamalpa Institute, a movement based expressive arts therapy program, and  Open Floor International, a conscious dance practice.

In 2016, I became an Open Floor graduate. Being an Open Floor teacher grants me the privilege of guiding others while they learn about themselves through movement and dance.

Here’s an interview I did with Leslie Langbert, Director of Compassion Studies at the University of Arizona about movement as a meditation practice and a means to become more compassionate.

Keep the Channel Open: by Martha Graham

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening, that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time,
this expression is unique.,

And If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.
The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine
how good it is
nor how valuable it is
nor how it compares with other expressions.

It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly
to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.

Keep the channel open…
No artist is pleased…

There is no satisfaction whatever at anytime
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction
a blessed unrest that keeps us marching
and makes us more alive…
